Rising Schengen Visa Rejection Rates Become a Growing Concern for Indian Travellers

Rising Schengen Visa Rejection Rates Become a Growing Concern for Indian Travellers

Europe has long been a favored destination for Indian tourists, students, and business travelers. In 2025, Schengen visa applications reached record levels, with India retaining its position as the world’s third-largest applicant country. However, alongside this growing demand, Indian citizens are also facing an increasing rate of visa rejections, which is higher than the global average.

India’s Growing Contribution to Schengen Visa Applications

According to the latest figures released by the European Commission, Indian nationals submitted more than 1.15 million Schengen visa applications in 2025. India ranked behind only China and Turkey in terms of total applications filed.

Although the number of applications continues to rise, nearly 181,000 applications were not approved. As a result, the rejection rate for Indian applicants stood at 15.8%, exceeding the global average of 14.8%. This trend is becoming a cause for concern among those planning trips to Europe.

Why Are Visa Rejections Increasing?

Experts believe several factors are contributing to the growing number of visa refusals. Incomplete documentation, insufficient financial proof, unclear travel plans, inadequate travel insurance, and concerns about whether applicants will return to their home country after their visit are among the most common reasons.

Additionally, Schengen countries have tightened their application review processes. Visa officers now conduct more detailed assessments of applicants’ travel history, employment or business background, financial condition, and supporting documents. Even minor errors or inconsistencies can negatively affect an application’s outcome.

Schengen Countries with the Highest Rejection Rates for Indians

Visa approval rates vary significantly across the Schengen region. Some countries reported particularly high rejection rates for Indian applicants in 2025:

  • Slovenia – 46.1%
  • Bulgaria – 37%
  • Greece – 33%
  • Malta – 31.7%
  • Estonia – 30.1%
  • Croatia – 27.1%
  • Austria – 21.6%
  • Netherlands – 20.6%

Among the most popular tourist destinations, Greece drew particular attention due to its relatively high rejection rate despite strong demand from Indian travelers.

Which Countries Offer Better Approval Chances?

While some countries have made their visa procedures stricter, others continue to provide relatively better approval prospects for Indian applicants. Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark processed a large number of Indian applications while maintaining comparatively lower rejection rates.

Financial Impact of Visa Rejections

A visa refusal does not only disrupt travel plans—it can also result in financial losses. Since Schengen visa application fees are generally non-refundable, applicants lose the entire fee if their application is denied.

Over the years, Indian travelers have collectively lost hundreds of crores of rupees due to rejected visa applications, creating a significant financial burden for many families and professionals.

How to Improve Your Chances of Visa Approval

Experts recommend applying well in advance of the intended travel date and ensuring that all documents are accurate, complete, and up to date. Maintaining sufficient bank balances, obtaining valid travel insurance, and providing a detailed travel itinerary can strengthen an application.

Applicants can also improve their chances by submitting strong evidence related to employment, business ownership, property holdings, or family commitments, helping demonstrate their intention to return to India after their trip.

What Can Be Expected in 2026?

Industry experts believe Europe will remain one of the most preferred international destinations for Indian travelers in 2026. However, as demand continues to rise, visa verification and screening procedures are expected to become even more rigorous.

In this environment, thorough preparation, complete documentation, and timely application submission will be crucial for securing a successful visa outcome. Applicants who carefully follow all requirements and provide strong supporting evidence are likely to have a better chance of approval.
