At the unveiling of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models today, Apple’s Kaiann Drance highlighted their compatibility with the Qi2 charging standard. However, this doesn’t necessarily translate to faster Qi charging.
According to Apple’s specs, Qi charging for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro remains at 7.5W, while MagSafe offers 15W.
Qi2, a novel wireless charging standard based on Apple’s MagSafe tech, features a Magnetic Power Profile, ensuring precise alignment with charging devices, and aims to enhance energy efficiency for faster charging.
Several firms have unveiled Qi2 chargers with 15W capability, on par with MagSafe. However, it seems Apple’s iPhones won’t embrace the faster 15W Qi2 charging feature.
MagSafe charging speeds remain unchanged, and rumors about faster wired charging may not hold true. While there were speculations that iPhone 15 models might support faster charging with a 35W charger, Apple’s official tech specs page does not indicate any enhancements in fast charging.
iPhone 15 models will still reach 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes using a 20W or higher adapter. Whether a 35W or higher charger accelerates charging remains to be confirmed upon the devices’ release.
The report discloses Apple’s adoption of the Qi2 wireless charging standard in their upcoming smartphone, according to industry insiders who shared this detail with ChargerLab.
This support for Qi2 signifies that the phone will enable 15W wireless charging on non-Magsafe chargers, a notable upgrade from the iPhone 14 series which only supported 7.5W wireless charging on non-Magsafe chargers.
This previous limitation in wireless charging speed resembled the constraints placed on non-MFi-certified products. MFi, an Apple certification, mandates manufacturers to acquire a license for producing Apple accessories.
