The Pindus Mountains’ Zagori region.
Located in the secluded northwest of mainland Greece, the Zagori area is characterized by the verdant Pindus mountains, which harbor alpine lakes, the deepest canyon globally, and unspoiled river pools. Additionally, the region is renowned for its mountain settlements, also known as Zagorochoria, constructed around magnificent squares shaded by plane trees, and linked through stone-paved trade routes and Ottoman bridges.
In the northern part of the area, Konitsa boasts one of the most remarkable bridges, constructed in 1870 to cross the Aoos River. Residents play in turquoise waters beneath a bell that hangs overhead, cautioning against the winds that could jeopardize those attempting to cross.
For exploring the stunning main thoroughfare of Zagori, Papingo is the ideal hub, located a 45-minute drive deeper into the mountains. The region’s highlight, the Vikos Gorge, one of the world’s deepest, lies to the southwest of Vikos, nestled between steep limestone cliffs that harbor a succession of refreshing springs and swimming holes ideal for jumping and diving. On the other hand, the bracingly icy Papingo rock pools are situated below towering cliffs, a bit to the northeast, providing a thrilling experience.
